Municipal Government Board

The Municipal Government Board is an independent and impartial body set up to make decisions on certain appeals and disputes stemming from the Municipal Government Act. This act forms the legal basis for the way local governments in cities, towns, villages and rural areas operate in Alberta.

Local governments make wide-ranging decisions that affect the lives of Albertans in many ways.  For example, your local government has the power to set the assessment on your property. It can allow new subdivisions to be built when and where they are needed.

The Municipal Government Board exists to rule on such issues as:

  • Appeals on property assessment from decisions of a local Assessment Review Board. For example, if you don't think a decision concerning your property by the Assessment Review Board is fair, you can appeal the decision to the Municipal Government Board.
  • Complaints for linear property assessment. Linear property includes pipelines and electrical power lines.
  • Appeals concerning subdivisions and equalized assessment. Equalized assessment aims to make sure that property wealth is calculated in the same way in all municipalities.
  • Disputes between municipalities.
  • Annexation matters. Under some circumstances, municipalities have the right to annex or take over certain lands.
  • Conflicts between municipalities and two or more management bodies such as housing authorities.
  • Any other matters referred by the Minister or Lieutenant Governor.
