Municipal Sponsorship Program

The Municipal Sponsorship Program has been discontinued in 2010/11.  Funding for similar purposes is available under the Municipal Sustainability Initiative.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Municipal Sponsorship Program (MSP) was introduced in 1998 to promote innovation, cooperation and excellence in municipal practices by funding projects that improve municipal governance or administration, enhance municipal services or service delivery, and/or increase intermunicipal cooperation.

ELIGIBILITY

All municipalities in Alberta (i.e., cities, towns, villages, summer villages, specialized municipalities, municipal districts), improvement districts, special areas or Metis settlements with a population between one and 20,000 (based on the latest Official Population List) qualify for base funding under the MSP.  Municipalities may choose to apply for bonus funding, depending on the project.

QUALIFYING PROJECTS

Municipalities determine projects and activities to be funded by the MSP based on local priorities within the general criteria set out in the program guidelines.  All grant funding is conditional and project-based, and can be applied to operating or capital expenditures, or both.
